Description

Pico do Areeiro has 14,360 m2, including the surface corresponding to the lagoon that exists inside.

It is a fully fenced property with stone walls, with several drinking tanks supplied from a spring located in Pico da Cruz and with access, by a rural path of about 250 meters, which connects the building directly to the road of the Goatling.
It has been planted with Cryptomeria since 2003. Part of the interior slopes of the volcanic cone were not planted for economic reasons, and are occupied with natural and spontaneous vegetation up to the level of the water level.

Pico do Areeiro is part of the land that constitutes the Natural Park of Terceira Island, and is classified as a Protected Area for Resource Management, which covers the entire Caldeira Guilherme Moniz. This status, which is regulated by Regional Legislative Decree No. 11/2011/A, of April 20, does not prevent the culture installed in Pico do Areeiro from being exploited under legal terms in accordance with the ecological interest of the area.
The Cryptoméria stand that is planted and growing, when it reaches the cutting age foreseen in the legislation (30 years), can be cut, and for this purpose it must obtain a prior opinion from the competent services:
• Environment Service, as the managing entity of the Natural Park of Terceira Island;
• Forest Service, as the authority for the management of forests.
The trees that are in development have economic value, which will have successive additions until they are exploited at 30 years old. That is, the woody material of the Cryptomeria, already 20 years in the making, represents a good part of this value in the final product.
